Cancer patients will no longer need to go through PCT funding processes prior to applying to the Government’s Cancer Drugs Fund.
The measure is part of new guidance issued by the Department of Health to improve the speed of access to medicines patients require.
Health Minister Lord Howe said the move will “ensure patients get the fastest possible access to the drugs they need” and see individuals prescribed treatment within a matter of days.
The DH drafted the guidance after working with NHS colleagues and taking into account public feedback from cancer charities.
It also plans to undertake an audit of the Drugs Fund, Lord Howe said, to generate evidence of products available through the Fund for the benefit of wider NHS practice.
“Our priority is to ensure that cancer patients get the drugs their doctors believe are best for them,” said Lord Howe.
