Merck has appointed Cuong Viet Do as Chief Strategy Officer, responsible for enterprise strategy and building connections between the franchises of the company.
He will report to Merck’s President and CEO, Kenneth C. Frazier, who says: “As the health care environment continues to evolve, Cuong's expertise in developing and implementing global business strategy will help position Merck to deliver long-term value.”
Mr Do has been serving as Senior Vice President of TE Connectivity, formerly Tyco Electronic, since 2009. He also currently sits on the Board of WuXi AppTec, a pharmaceutical company that outsources R&D.
The new CSO said he was looking forward to “working with the exceptional employees at Merck to further define and implement strategies that can deliver on the company's commitment to become the world's leading health care company”.
He succeeds Mervyn Turner, who retired from the company this summer.

Sanofi has appointed Dr David-Alexandre Gros as its new Chief Strategy Officer.
Dr Gros will join the group’s Executive Committee and oversee business development and acquisition activities, as well as other tasks including strategic planning and intelligence.
Christopher Viehbacher, Sanofi Chief Executive Officer, says the new CSO’s “wealth of experience” will “contribute significantly” to the company’s strategy and transformation.
He joins Sanofi after serving as an advisor to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and diagnostic companies as a Principal and founding member of Centerview Partners.
